For 13 years we have proven you can take product manufactured in our industry and build yourself a hot rod.

One that you would be proud of and feel safe to drive to coffee and donuts on an early Saturday morning or pack the trunk and drive across country to a regional or national event and home again. Taking a look at the street rod industry we found out rather quickly that you can do anything from a complete turnkey frame and suspension upgrade to bolt-on chassis upgrades that included front and rear suspensions, engine and tranny swaps, and interior upgrades.

The ' Chevy may well be to the post-'48 crowd what the '32 Ford is to the pre-'49 fans--an iconic car that has a list as long as your driveway of components to build a car from scratch; although right now you must supply the sheetmetal but who knows what the future holds. This story concentrates on where to locate parts while at the same time we ask longtime hot rod artist Thom Taylor to give us some ideas to launch our own build.

If you are wondering where to find a car's model number: under floor mat forward of passenger side of front seat; on driver's side front door pillar. Let's take a look at some history of the ' Chevy. Beginning in Chevrolet was very proud of their first all-new post-war car. There were 14 new models divided into the Fleetline and Styleline series; the Fleetline had both two- and four-door fastbacks, while the Styleline was represented by sedans, coupes, station wagons, and a convertible.

There were two trim levels based on the Deluxe and a Special. Chevrolet also sold 1. The framerails were built with what was called box girder construction, a design that dated to and would continue through From '49 through '54 the wheelbase was inches, front tread was 57 inches for ', The steering box bolted to the left framerail and had a draglink, similar to what you would expect with a solid axle, which attached to a bellcrank mounted to the center of the crossmember, which in turn was connected to the spindles by individual tie rods.

In the rear, more engineering leftover from the '30s can be found in a closed driveline. The torque tube is solidly attached to the rearend like early Fords and connects to the rear of the transmission with a ball and socket arrangement.

At first blush it would appear that sliding an open-drive rearend in place would be a simple swap. However, because of the mounts used on the original rear axle housing the center bolts of the springs aren't really in the center of the springs and installing a substitute axle in the normal manner will result in the wheels being too far forward in the fender openings. AaronPJan 28, Just an FYI here. There's a good article in the current issue of Lowrider magazine on how to bag a stock chevy front end. WasahawaiianratJan 29, I've posted this link before, but you must check the newest updates. Just click "The Project Blue Eye". WasahawaiianratJan 30, Yeah grease monkey! I noticed on the blue 54 happy hoppy posted, they built new crossmembers for the trans so they were inside the frame instead of under it, but they didnt use any rubber mnt at the trans.

I now this is an old thread. I noticed Gambinos response recommending to use 5" instead of 6" bags on a stock front suspension to avoid rubbing in the frame. Should of called him first!!! I plan on installing airbags on my desoto with a stock front end. I noticed the coil opening on the frame appeared to be much wider than other cars and was hoping to get away with 6" bags without having to cut the frame for clearance.

Another reason to use the 6" bags was because SS5's have a max height of they have 8.

Chevrolet Fleetline Cars for sale

Three on the tree. We have Up for sale is my Chevy Fleetline Aerosedan, which has been in my family for about 25 years. Mustang Front Not running. Very solid body and floors. Next to No title. Not currently running. Fairly complete car. Nice body but h Refine Search. Getting your tools stolen is a drag. Getting improved replacements is a win. Interested In Other Items?Undeniably one of Chevrolet's greatest design achievements of the midth century, the Fleetline may have had a rather short lifespan, but its overwhelming success propelled Chevy to number one in sales each and every year from its four-door Sportsmaster debut in till the following decade when the DeLuxe two-door made its last appearance on the new-model roster.

Obviously, there was a little four-year gap in sales during the second world war, but even though the Aerosedan was nothing more than a dolled-up carryover fromits streamlined styling was no match for the competition.

And even America's next situation abroad, the Korean conflict, had little effect on production other than learning what the absence of nickel has on chrome plating or initial sales.

1947 to 1949 Chevrolet Fleetline for Sale

But come Chevy had scaled down the once multi-model offering to just the one two-door fastback, which in most regions was not available with whitewall tires, a very important option for buyers leading back to when the stylish rubber had come back into vogue. It would be another decade before the company manufactured another fastback—but despite having an even shorter life, that particular fiberglass model would wind up becoming more iconic than any Fleetline.

Generally speaking, when it comes to their full-fendered rides "bombs"lowriders have always gravitated toward '30s-'40s Chevys. While the Master DeLuxe may be the Ford of lowriding in terms of desirability and clout, the Fleetline has and will always be a cultural icon. And the various model configurations are definitely no strangers to hot rodding and custom makeovers, either—usually, the visual intent is clearly obvious.

But then there are mixtures of all three that defy specific categorizing. Is it a lowrider, mild custom, or?

Unsolved mysteries india

Andy Sapien's family DeLuxe two-door sedan is a perfect example of cultures combined—and it answers that question simply by being "just right. It's the presentation of the exterior that really sets the tone for the Sapiens' sedan. Handles and its DeLuxe trim are still present, but gone are the headlight bezels lights frenchedhood and trunk emblems nosed and deckedand the taillights altogether frenched Cadillacs insteadwhile bumpers are now void of protruding hardware.

After Andy's family had completed the various body mods, Daniel Vasquez finished the Fleetline's bodywork in preparation for the House of Kolor candy green he applied a bit of traditional pinstriping on the front and rear ends was added as well.

With Shannon cones on chrome reverse wheels, skinny whitewalls, and that nose-down stance, there's no mistaking this is no traditional lowrider Chevy it's simply the Sapiens' Fleetline, just as Andy and his family intended it to be.

All the usual custom tricks plus all the luxury features you'd expect make for one exceptional rod that drives so well you'll want to take it to work every day. Sometimes modern colors just don't work on vintage sheetmetal, but the brilliant copper finish on this fastback definitely works. Taken from the late-model GM color pallet, it give the sleek little Chevy an elegant look without being too over-the-top about it.

And you should see it out in the sun! Fit and finish are excellent throughout, with great gaps and a great deal of time invested in subtle modes like the shaved door handles, molded-in fenders, and shaved deck lid. You'll also dig the flush-mounted LED taillights and the nosed and decked hood that don't erase the Fleetline's personality but definitely removes the things that hold up the eye. The original bumpers were restored and tucked in close to the body for a clean look and the original Chevy grill is highly recognizable, even 55 years later.

Tasteful is the best way to describe the fully reupholstered interior. Low-back buckets wear pleated leather seat covers that hang on to the '40s design while being thoroughly modern.

Custom carpets and mats with the Chevy bowtie emblem add a sophisticated contrast and the door panels were made to match. Even the dash was painted tan instead of body color to keep everything clean. Even the billet steering wheel was wrapped in matching tan leather, and we remain very impressed by the workmanship. And even with the fastback profile, the trunk is quite spacious and is outfitted with matching carpets.

The engine is a cubic inch V8 that fits quite neatly under the Fleetline's long hood. The firewall was custom made, as were the inner fenders, so the shiny polished engine is beautifully highlighted and most of the plumbing and wiring is cleverly hidden out of sight. Billet valve covers and a matching air cleaner give it a clean, uncluttered look and with a big aluminum radiator up front, there are really no worries about overheating. The transmission is a R4 4-speed automatic overdrive, so this is a rod you could drive every day if you wanted to and there's really no downside.

Good fursona creator

A custom front suspension with rack-and-pinion steering and A-arms means that it handles and rides like a new car and the burbling Flowmaster exhaust always gets attention. There's a heavy-duty Ford 9-inch rear end on air shocks, so you can fine-tune the ride and attitude regardless of the baggage and with an undercoated chassis, you should have no qualms about putting this one on the road. This is a fully sorted car that drives every bit as great as it looks. If you're looking for something a little beyond the usual Tri-Five, perhaps this sleek Fleetline will fit the bill.
